Kansas Homeschool Civics Week (scholarships and other giveaways!)

kansas homeschool civics week

UPDATE: Deadline to visit your state lawmakers extended to Dec. 15!

MPE originally joined CHECK, TPA and HSLDA in designating the week of November 13-17, 2017, as “Kansas Homeschool Civics Week.”

We offered $250 college scholarships to eight homeschool students who visited their Kansas State senator or representative during that time. HSLDA also offered eight free 1-year memberships to eligible families.

This means that four prizes are available in each of the 4 congressional districts of Kansas – 2 college scholarships and HSLDA’s 2 free 1-year memberships!

However, several homeschool families were unable to see either their senator or state rep during this time.

We want to make this contest available to as many as possible, so we are extending Civics Week to more like Civics Month!

How does Civics Week work?

The purpose is simple: for you to get to know your legislators, and them to get to know you, and create a relationship.

Lawmakers are like the rest of us: they pay more attention to people with whom they already have a relationship. If you visit and create a relationship, they will pay more attention if you contact them later to ask them to oppose a bill that is hostile to homeschool freedom. Even a 15-minute visit can create a relationship! And the likelihood of a bad bill being filed this year is far greater than ever before for a variety of reasons.

You can find contact information for lawmakers here.

  • On this PDF are some questions (we recommend 3-5) to get the conversation going and help your kids learn some civics. Your senator or rep may ask you and your kids some questions, too!
  • Here is a Kansas homeschool fact sheet you can give that may answer some of their questions. You don’t need to be an expert. Just be yourself!

If they stump you with a question you’re not ready for, just tell them you will get back to them later with an answer. There are folks in all the sponsoring organizations who can help you with answers to tough questions.

Your visit is important! You may be the only homeschool family your senator or rep has ever met. Homeschooling may be virtually invisible to them until your visit. You will be the ambassador for homeschooling! It’s even possible that the senator or rep you get to know will end up being crucial to protecting homeschool freedom this year.

Kansas Homeschool Civics Week is a tremendous opportunity to protect homeschool freedom and give kids a powerful lesson in civics. Be part of it!

Civics Week Contest Rules and Entry Form

To participate, we invite you and your older kids to make an appointment for a face-to-face visit with your state senator or representative (or both!). Between now and Dec. 15, your state representative and senator will be in their own hometowns. You can meet them without driving to Topeka!

Your representative or senator can sign a certificate saying he or she met with you. We’ll use these certificates in a random drawing to select the winners of eight scholarships and eight free HSLDA 1-year memberships.

One winner per family, but multiple entries per family are allowed. For example, if you have 3 children in attendance, each one may enter.

  1. Print off this contest certificate for each child.
  2. Meet with your state senator, state representative, or both from your home district not later than Dec. 15. Ask them to sign your certificate.
  3. Fill out one form for each child below with an upload of his/her signed certificate before 9 a.m. Monday, Dec. 18. For more than one child, you will need to copy the URL in this page’s browser window and paste it to a new tab or window for the next entry. If you simply refresh the page, your previous entry will be resubmitted.
  4. You will receive an automatic return email acknowledging your form submission. If you do not receive it within a few hours, check your Junk Mail folder first. If it is not there, please email info@midwesthomeschoolers.org with the subject line: Civics Contest confirmation needed.
  5. Help us spread the word on social media. Post a picture of your child with the signed certificate using #hscivicsweek to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram! Bonus props if you tag the Kansas homeschool organizations – MPE, CHECK and TPA – in your post.
  6. Check our Facebook page at 7 p.m. Dec. 19 for a Facebook Live drawing, where we will announce the scholarship winners! Winners will also be emailed after the drawing.

  • Contest promoters are not responsible for entries that aren’t received.
  • We will select 2 scholarship winners for each of the 4 Kansas Federal legislative districts, one for someone meeting their senator in each district and one for meeting their representative. There are 125 house members and 40 senators eligible to be visited. Plus, we will select winners of 2 free HSLDA memberships from each district, one from each category.  So there will be 4 winners in each category.
  • If we don’t receive entries for a senate or house district, we will establish a second-chance drawing from all entries that haven’t won an award.
  • A check for $250.00 will be sent to each winning student. The money is to be used for educational expenses/experiences. Kansas has a college savings program called Quest 529. A firm has offered to help any family set this up at no charge.
  • HSLDA winners will be notified and given a code to enter on the HSLDA membership application site for their complimentary membership. The family would need to meet HSLDA’s eligibility requirements (if not already a member) to receive the free 1-year membership.
  • All decisions of the CHECK board regarding this contest will be final.

The Civics Week suggestion was wonderful! We were finally able to meet with our representative & had a lovely chat. My son absolutely loved visiting with her about politics & principles, and he is looking forward to paging for her next session!
