Many parents are comfortable homeschooling when their children are young. The material is simple and teaching at home during the formative years can be a great benefit to parents and children alike. But what about when children reach middle school and high school?

The subject matter becomes more difficult as children grow older, and sometimes parents might feel inadequate about their abilities to teach complex material.

Who could blame them? No matter how intelligent a parent might be, it’s probably been years since he or she learned calculus formulas, read some of the world’s finest pieces of literature, or performed science experiments in a lab.

Fortunately, several quality options exist for middle school and high school, including American School, a leader in distance education since 1897.

Over the last 120 years, American School has served more than 3 million students in all 50 states and more than 65 countries worldwide. Continue reading to learn more about American School’s curriculum and services for students in grades 6-12, and hear from some students and parents have to say about American School.

High School

American School offers a high school diploma program for students in grades 9-12. A general high school program is suitable for students who plan to attend a two-year college or join the workforce after graduating.

A college preparatory program is suitable for students who plan to attend a four-year college or university after graduating. No matter which program a student chooses, he or she receives the following benefits:

  • Students start anytime, study anywhere and work at their own pace
  • Courses in print and online formats
  • Access to Online Student Center for students and parents
  • Experienced, qualified instructors

Each year of high school consists of 5 units of credit and costs $900. Therefore a full high school diploma program consists of 20 units of credit and costs $3600. Interest-free monthly payment plans are available, and tuition always includes all study materials and grading.

The American School is outstanding! While I was studying high school I was able to work at my own pace and manage my own time so I could have a job and graduate early. In addition to that, the material is put in a way I could easily understand, and I learned so much more because of that. I would recommend the American School to anyone interested in preparing themselves for a better future.

Middle School

American School also offers a middle school program for students in grades 6-8. Each year of middle school consists of 5 units of credit and costs $900. Therefore a full middle school program consists of 15 units of credit and costs $2700. A full middle school program has the same benefits as those listed above for the high school program, and, as with the high school diploma program, interest-free monthly payment plans are available, and tuition always includes all study materials and grading.

The homeschooling experience was well worth it, and the American School is a great choice for home study.

Individual Subjects

If parents believe a full-year or full diploma program is not the right fit for their child, American School makes its courses available on an individual basis. Courses are available in the following subject areas:
• English
• Math
• Science
• Social Studies
• Fine Arts
• World Languages
• Business, Career and Technical Education

Individual subjects typically cost between $150 and $400 each. Students may enroll anytime, choose from print or online options and receive the same type of support as students in full-year or full diploma programs.

I found the American School’s curriculum very satisfactory. I enjoyed the material and its methods. Grammar and math, my toughest subjects, were much easier to understand than any of my previous books. The comments my instructors left on my graded work were helpful and encouraging. Overall I was happy with my courses.

No matter which programs or courses families choose, they receive the benefits of American School’s four C’s—curriculum, cost, caring student service and credibility. American School’s credibility comes in the form of accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools-Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools (MSA-CESS), Accreditation International (Ai) and the National Council for Private School Accreditation (NCPSA) and recognition as a non-public school by the State of Illinois.

American School’s courses and diploma are accepted at colleges and universities around the world, and American School offers scholarships for graduates to continue their education at the accredited institution of their choice.

American School offers accredited middle school and high school courses at an affordable cost. You can see them at our homeschool conference in April. Visit www.americanschool.org or call 708-418-2800 to learn how American School can help you educate your middle school or high school children!
